See how Web3 loyalty programs work in 2026, why one transfer setting can move your MiCA scope and breakage revenue together, and the build order I'd follow.
Frequently Asked Questions
- A Web3 loyalty program issues rewards as tokens held in a wallet the member controls, instead of as a balance in a database only the brand can see. Earning, holding and redeeming happen against a public ledger, and the brand decides in the token contract whether a point can move between members. Most programs worth building hide the wallet behind a normal sign-up, so the member sees points and perks, not keys and gas fees.
- It depends on transferability. The Joint European Supervisory Authorities list non-transferable tokens, such as points from loyalty schemes, among the crypto-assets MiCA does not apply to (Joint ESAs, 2025). Once points can move between holders, the Title II offer rules become the question, and the limited network exemption in Article 4(3), point (d), only helps if the points are usable solely with merchants who have contractual arrangements with the offeror. Above EUR 1,000,000 of consideration per 12-month period under that exemption, the offeror must notify its competent authority (ESMA, MiCA Article 4).
- Starbucks announced the Odyssey Beta would close on 31 March 2024, saying the beta had to end to prepare for what comes next as it continued to evolve the program (The Block, March 2024). My read is that the core loyalty mechanics were never the problem; the collectible layer on top was a separate product with its own audience, but it was run as an extension of the rewards program.
