01.What is the difference between an AI agent and an AI agent platform?

An agent is one application that pursues a goal by calling a model and tools. A platform is the shared layer every agent in the company runs on: the runtime, the tool gateway with its policy checks, agent identities and scoped credentials, approval gates, tracing, evaluation and cost metering. Build the platform before the second agent ships, because each team otherwise rebuilds those controls differently.

02.Can I start with an MVP instead of a full platform?

Yes. The minimum platform is one gateway that every tool call passes through, a separate identity for each agent, a trace with tenant and agent tags on every model call, and an approval step for irreversible actions. Model routing, evaluation sampling and chargeback can follow once traffic justifies them. What you should not defer is the gateway, because retrofitting it means rewriting every agent's tool calls.

03.Should an operator build or buy the agent platform layer?

Buy the commodity parts, such as the sandboxed runtime and the metered tool gateway, when a cloud you already use offers them. Build the parts that encode your business: the tool contracts, the policy rules, the approval matrix and the cost attribution that matches your tenants and cost centres. Most operators end up with a managed runtime plus a thin platform layer they own.

04.Do human approval gates slow AI agents down too much?

Only if they sit on every action. Place them on irreversible or money-moving actions, show the reviewer the exact parameters, and let reads and drafts run without review. Under the EU AI Act, from 2 December 2027 for Annex III systems, high-risk systems must let people, as appropriate and proportionate, decide not to use the system or to disregard, override or reverse its output, and deployers must assign oversight to people with the competence and authority to do so (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, Articles 14 and 26).
