Assess Ethereum's precompile roadmap as an investment layer. EIP-4844, EIP-2537, and EIP-7212 signal where performance infrastructure capital should go in 2024.
Frequently Asked Questions
- A precompile is a piece of logic built directly into the Ethereum protocol at a fixed address, rather than deployed as ordinary bytecode. Because the logic runs as native client code instead of interpreted EVM opcodes, operations that would cost hundreds of thousands of gas in Solidity can cost a fraction of that through a precompile. For capital allocators, precompiles matter because they define which categories of application, from cryptographic signatures to data availability, become economically viable on-chain. A new precompile can turn a previously uneconomical product category into a fundable business line.
- Precompiles themselves are not investable assets; they are protocol-level infrastructure. The relevant allocation decision is in the application and tooling layer built on top of each precompile: rollups that depend on the blob transaction mechanism in EIP-4844, wallet infrastructure that depends on the secp256r1 curve support proposed in EIP-7212, and validator or bridging infrastructure that depends on the BLS12-381 operations in EIP-2537. Diligence should focus on teams building production systems on finalized or near-finalized EIPs, since draft-stage proposals can still change scope or be withdrawn before client teams schedule them into a network upgrade.
- Timelines vary by EIP maturity. EIP-4844, first proposed in 2022, reached Ethereum core developer consensus for mainnet activation on March 13, 2024 as part of the Dencun upgrade. EIP-2537, proposing BLS12-381 curve precompiles, was created in February 2020 and remained in active discussion among core developers as of February 2024 without a confirmed mainnet date. EIP-7212, covering secp256r1 signature verification for hardware wallets and passkeys, was under active Ethereum Magicians forum review as of February 2024. Capital allocators should treat confirmed mainnet dates, not EIP numbers alone, as the underwriting signal.
