Post-quantum cryptography for blockchain refers to signature and key-exchange algorithms that remain secure against attacks by quantum computers. Current blockchains use ECDSA, which is broken by Shor's algorithm on a sufficiently powerful fault-tolerant quantum computer. NIST finalized three post-quantum standards in August 2024: ML-DSA (FIPS 204), SLH-DSA (FIPS 205), and ML-KEM (FIPS 203). These replace ECDSA and RSA before NIST's deprecation deadline after 2030.

ISACA's 2025 Quantum Computing Pulse Poll found the vast majority of organizations have no defined quantum computing strategy, creating a dangerous readiness gap. Enterprises with exposed public keys on XRPL are already subject to harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks, where adversaries store signed transactions today for decryption when quantum hardware matures. Beginning cryptographic migration planning in 2026 provides a four-year runway to avoid a forced emergency transition.
